Allegory:

An allegory is an extended metaphor--a story that has two meaning, a literal meaning and a symbolic meaning. The Pushcart War is an allegory.

Oxymoron:

On page 222 in the Dark is Rising we found an oxymoron which is a word the opposite of an idea "Give this to the Hunter young Old One".

Personification:

Personification is giving inanimate objects human qualities such as this sentence from THE DARK IS RISING ON PAGE 20,  "one rippling,  bell-like phrase running through it in a gold thread of delight." Which by the way, is also a metaphor and imagery. Also from the Dark is Rising on page 106, " Summer trees full of leaf, whispering, massive; dark winter firs that fear no master and let no light brighten their woods."

Propaganda:

Propaganda is a systematic effort to spread opinions or beliefs; any plan or method for spreading opinions or beliefs like the on page 114 in The Dark Is Rising "'The Dark and the Rider are kinder masters than the Light,' Maggie Barnes said softly into his ear." In the Pushcart War Big Moe spreads propaganda about pushcarts getting in accidents to persuade all truck drivers that the traffic hold-up is the pushcarts fault.

If you're handed it, you can handle it!
