YA Guidelines

1. Write an original story, possibly about something you know.

2. Create a good title.

3. Tell about a main character.

4. Have your character want  something or give the character a problem.

5. Check to see if your story makes sense.

6. Add feelings, reactions and descriptions.

7. Make a colorful illustration for the cover and illustrate throughout the story.

8. Students in grades K-2 may write their story in pencil. If an adult types it for them it must be the student’s  language and words.

9. Students in grades 3-5 must type their story.

10. Make sure your manuscript has:

•a sturdy binding

•clear plastic cover

•cover has an illustration and title

•cover must have:

-author’s first and last name

-school name

-grade

-room number

For success, the author must make the reader care about the destiny of the principals, and sustain this anxiety, or suspense, for about 100,000 words.
